Securing Future-Fuel Shipping

Introduction

As methane-based fuels like LNG face criticism, the maritime industry is pivoting toward more sustainable alternatives. This shift unlocks innovation, but also brings complex security challenges for all stakeholders.

Industry context

Decarbonisation efforts and the adoption of alternative fuel technologies can inadvertently widen the threat landscape. New fuel types require specialised handling and systems, increasing the risk of cyber intrusions or physical sabotage. Compliance with ISPS and IMO protocols must evolve to address fuel-specific hazards, especially in ports unfamiliar with these new technologies. Expanded routing and bunkering options may also elevate exposure to piracy, smuggling, and safety incidents—threatening operational continuity and crew welfare.

Practical measures

  • Embed trained onboard security personnel during transition or pilot fuelling phases.
  • Enhance cyber hygiene to protect new propulsion control systems.
  • Integrate threat intelligence into routing decisions near bunkering hotspots.
  • Conduct safety and emergency response drills tailored to alternative fuels.
  • Update SOPs to address transitional risk factors across vessel and shore teams.
