From Military To Shipboards

Introduction

Ex-military personnel are often well placed to transition into ship security roles, but it is rarely a direct move without targeted preparation. This FAQ outlines how armed forces experience translates at sea and what additional steps are usually required to become an effective vessel security professional.

Industry context

Modern vessel security sits within a complex risk environment shaped by piracy, armed robbery, smuggling, stowaways, and increasingly cyber-enabled threats to navigation and cargo systems. Compliance with the ISPS Code and broader IMO frameworks demands that ship security officers and guards understand how security planning, drills, access control and reporting support the Ship Security Plan and the Master’s overall responsibility for safety. For ex-military candidates, this means adapting existing threat awareness, discipline and reporting skills to a maritime context where long rotations, multinational crews and close integration with bridge teams are the norm.

Practical measures

  • Obtain and maintain core seafarer documentation, including a valid passport, seafarer medical certificate and any required sea service records or security endorsements for your target role.
  • Complete recognised maritime and security training, such as ship security awareness, first aid and any flag, port or client-mandated qualifications, and keep certificates audit ready.
  • Demonstrate understanding of maritime compliance by learning how the ISM Code, ISPS Code and Ship Security Plan work in practice, and by practising clear, concise written reporting.
  • Prepare for life at sea by setting realistic expectations about long deployments, shared accommodation, diverse crews and security duties that emphasise prevention, observation and documentation over confrontation.
  • Build shipboard experience through entry-level or trainee roles where you can develop familiarity with vessel routines, watchkeeping, drills and coordination with the Master, ship’s officers and shore authorities.
